40 anni e non sentirli...

Che numero! Sono molto orgoglioso di comunicare a tutti, soci, amici e amanti del tennis, che siamo arrivati alla quarantesima edizione del Torneo Internazionale Under 18. Generalmente a me piace parlare del presente e pensare al futuro, ma in questo caso credo che sia opportuno guardarsi indietro, guardare a quanta strada è stata fatta e iniziare a celebrarsi.
Tanta strada ha fatto questo torneo dalla prima edizione del 1984 che vide le vittorie di Omar Camporese e Laura Murgo. Migliaia di giovani giocatori e giocatrici sono passati dal nostro meraviglioso circolo per misurarsi sui nostri campi. Tanti di loro sono diventati dei fuoriclasse assoluti: Federer, Murray, Medvedev, Nadal, Haas, Ljubicic, Zverev, Berrettini, Sinner, sono solo alcuni nomi dei ragazzi che sono passati da Prato. Clijster, Ivanovoc, Safina, Martinez, Pennetta, Schiavone, Errani, Vinci, alcune delle ragazze che ci hanno deliziato con i loro colpi. Come non essere orgogliosi di tutto questo? E com’è possibile non ringraziare tutti i presidenti e tutti i consiglieri che hanno preceduto il consiglio attuale. È grazie a loro, grazie alla loro voglia di far qualcosa di importante per il nostro Club e per la città, che oggi siamo arrivati a celebrare i quarant’anni di questo torneo, che è diventato un riferimento importante per tutta l’attività giovanile internazionale del tennis.
Oggi tutti parlano di tennis e tutti vogliono vedere giocare i campioni o i futuri campioni, gli spalti si riempiono di tifosi, ma quarant’anni fa non era così. Non era semplice investire sul tennis e investire sui giovani. Quindi grazie a chi ha avuto questa meravigliosa idea e grazie a tutti quelli che in questi quarant’anni l’hanno portata avanti e oggi ci permettono di festeggiare la quarantesima edizione di questo importante torneo. E che quarant’anni siano solo un punto di partenza.

40 years and... feeling young

Forty... what a number! I am extremely proud to inform everybody, all our members, friends and tennis' lovers, that this year we achieve the remarkable number of fortieth edition of the International Tournament Under 18. Generally speaking I like looking at present and thinking about future, but in this case I think it is appropriate to look back to realize how far we have come and to celebrate it!
We have come so far from first edition of this Tournment in 1984, when Omar Camporese for boys and Laura Murgo for girls won it. Thousand of young boys and girls have arrived to our wonderful Club to play and try to make their way out to victory and fame. Many of them have become outstanding players, if not worlwide Top Ten: Federer, Murray, Medvedev, Nadal, Haas, Ljubicic, Zverev, Berrettini, Sinner, are some of the boys we have seen play here in Prato. Clijster, Ivanovic, Safina, Martinez, Pennetta, Schiavone, Errani, Vinci, are some of the girls we have appreciated with their powerful shots. How not to be proud of all that? And how not to be grateful to all the Club Presidents and their boards of the past years? We owe all to them, to their willing of doing something special to be left as a legacy for future generation, for the Club and for the City of Prato; it is thank to them if today we can celebrate the fortieth edition of this Tournament that has become such an important reference point for the entire juniores tennis movement.
Nowadays everybody is a tennis specialist, and everybody want to see future champions play on our home courts, so the stands are full of fans, but it has not always been like that. It wasn't that easy to decide to invest on young tennis players: therefore a huge thanks has to go to who has been so far-sighted to believe in this idea, in this tournment, and to all of them that have been able to carry it through all the bad times, till this celebrating moment.
